G. Stewart Low
Gordon Stewart Low of Newberg died Sept. 14, 2007. He was 88.
He was born Dec. 25, 1918, in Elbow, Saskatchewan, Canada, to
William and Bertha (Rolen) Low. In 1937 the family moved to
Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He attended the Radio College of Canada in
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1945. He then moved to Roseburg, where
he started working for Pierce Freight Lines as an accountant.
On May 24, 1952, he married Cornelia Williams. The couple met at an
archery club. He was transferred by his employers to Portland in
1953.
He bought a 20-acre walnut and filbert farm in Sherwood in 1961
while continuing to work for Pierce Freight Lines. He sold the farm
and moved to Newberg in 1967. He then worked for Interstate Heavy
Hauling in Portland, retiring in 1982 and moving into a retirement
community in 1999.
He was a Mason and was lodge master in 1961 in Beaverton. He was a
member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Stewart and Ray; four brothers; two
sisters; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cornelia in 2004.
Viewing and visitation will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23 in
Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at
4 p.m. Sept. 23 in the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ron
Hues officiating.

Betty McAlpin
Betty J. McAlpin, formerly of Newberg, died Sept. 9, 2007, in
Hillsboro. She was 80.
She was born June 20, 1927, in Portland to Chester and Doris (McLoughlin)
Hanville. She grew up in Newberg, graduating from Newberg High
School in 1945. In February 1946, she married Bert Keifer in
Newberg. The couple had two children before divorcing.
She married in February 1959 to Donald McAlpin in Stevenson, Wash.
They settled in Spokane in 1960, where she worked as a clerk for the
Rockwood Clinic. In 1996, the couple returned to Oregon, settling in
Cornelius.
She enjoyed painting, cooking, gardening, hunting and camping
trips. She was a member of the Spokane Elks Lodge and bowled on
several leagues while living in Spokane.
Survivors include: sons, Steve Keifer of Hillsboro and Kelly
McAlpin of Spokane; daughter Jackie Waddell of Yamhill; three
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald and
sisters Thelma Campbell and Gwen Thornton.
No services will be held at her request. Committal will be in the
Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions may

Rosanna J. Brouer
Rosanna Jane Brouer of Newberg died Sept. 10, 2007, at a
McMinnville assisted living facility. She was 94.
She was born May 23, 1913, in Smith Center, Kan., to John and
Nellie (McMullen) Rhoades. After graduation from high school, she
moved to Dayton and later Newberg, where she worked for the local
cannery. She married Wilhelm Brouer in November 1938. They resided
in Eagle Creek before returning to Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Robert of Apex, N.C., Richard of Federal
Way, Wash., and Russell of Baker City; daughter Sharon Barton of
McMinnville; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and numerous
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded her in death by husband Wilhelm, four brothers and
two sisters.
A funeral service was held Sept. 13 in Grace Baptist Church.
Committal took place at Valley View Memorial Park.

Jewel Haveman
Jewel Haveman of Newberg died Sept. 5, 2007. She was 84.
She was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Enid, Okla., to John and Susie (Misenhimer)
Williams. Her family moved many times before they settled in the
Carlton area, where she attended White Cloud Elementary and Carlton
High School. She worked several years at the Carlton Glove Factory
and in September 1944 married Eldon Haveman. They lived in the
Portland area and McMinnville before settling in the Chehalem Valley
in 1951.
She was a member of West Chehalem Friends Church, the Rural
Homemakers Club and the Christian Women’s Club. She also volunteered
at the Newberg Thrift Store.
She enjoyed gardening and traveling, especially vacations to the
Netherlands, and annual deer hunting trips to the Ochoco Mountains.
She also enjoyed collecting toothpick holders, knitting, crocheting
and a variety of crafts.
Survivors include: son Randall of Newberg; daughters, Tamara Larson
of Newberg, Marsha Robinson of Otis and Tonya Van Bueren of
Winthrop, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Eldon in August 2002; sister
Juanita; and two infant grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Sept. 14 at West Chehalem Friends
Church.

Donald R. McLean
Donald Robert McLean of Dundee died Sept. 8, 2007 He was 83.
He was born July 1, 1924, in Pendleton to Kenneth and Erma (King)
McLean. He moved to Tigard in 1941, where he graduated from Tigard
High School. In March 1946, he married Joyce Sims in Corvallis. He
graduated from Oregon State University in 1949 with a bachelor’s
degree in food science and technology. He worked at The Dalles Co-op
in quality control for two years before returning to Tigard, where
he worked for his father in their hardware store. He later took a
job at Tektronix in Beaverton as an information analyst.
He retired in 1986 and moved to Dundee. He was an avid traveler and
enjoyed trips in his motorhome. He also enjoyed computers and
woodworking.
Survivors include: wife Joyce of Dundee; sons, Gary of Fruitland,
Idaho, and Vernon of Bishop, Calif.; four grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held at Valley View Memorial Park with
Pastor Gary Langenwalter officiating.

Cora M. Rowland
Newberg native Cora May Rowland died Sept. 6, 2007. She was 88.
She was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Newberg to Loren and Elsie May (Douthit)
Payne. Her family moved to Moore’s Valley when she was 5-years-old
and she attended Yamhill High School.
On June 12, 1935, she married Harry Rowland. She held jobs as an
assembly worker and in the restaurant business before joining the
staff of the Hillsboro hospital, retiring in 1984.
She enjoyed flowers, embroidery and gardening.
Survivors include: son LaRoy of Newberg; daughters, Peggy Burch of
McMinnville and Arla May Scott of Tigard; half-brothers Paul Smith
and Robert Smith of Tillamook; half-sister Wilma Reece of
California; 11 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry in 2005, and by five
half-brothers and one half-sister.
A service was held Monday morning at Chapel of Macy & Son at
Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Lon Eckdahl
officiating.
Allan R. Lord
Allan Robert Lord of Newberg died Sept, 8, 2007. He was 83.
He was born May 13, 1924, in St. Johns to George and Sylvia
(Reeves) Lord. He graduated from Benson High School in 1943. He
served in the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division from 1943 to 1945,
and was recognized for his service by the Northwest Indian Veterans
Association.
He married Ardith Wise on April 3, 1979. He worked for the Port of
Portland as a dock attendant for 30 years.
He enjoyed model trains and antique cars and was a member of four
car clubs, winning numerous trophies.
Survivors include: wife Ardith of Newberg; stepsons, Ken and Andy
Wise, both of Newberg, and Steve Wise of Tigard; stepdaughter Julie
Null of Portland; brother Donald of Mulino; two grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 23 at Astor House.
A private family service was held Sept. 12. Committal was in
Willamette National Cemetery.

Mildred C. Luyet
Mildred Clay Luyet of Newberg died Aug. 31, 2007. She was 86.
She was born March 29, 1921, in Marlow, Okla., to Amos and Bonnie
(Adams) McMaster. She attended school in Duncan, Okla. In 1952, she
settled in McMinnville, returning to Oklahoma in 1981 before
returning to the Northwest in 1983, living in Salem briefly and
settling in Newberg in 1987.
She was married twice, to Floyd Clay and Ray Luyet. Both husbands
preceded her in death.
Survivors include: son Ernest Clay of Salem; daughter Linda
McMillan of McMinnville; brother L.A. McMaster of Duncan, Okla.;
nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held Sept. 6, 2007, at Evergreen Memorial
Park in McMinnville with Pastor Jim Peterson officiating.
Kenneth H. Larsen
Kenneth Howard Larsen of Gaston died Sept. 1, 2007. He was 74.
He was born May 23, 1933, in Waukesha, Wis., to Evelyn and Neal
Larsen. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee or combat engineer.
Upon leaving the service he obtained his pilot’s license while
attending South Dakota State University, where he earned a
bachelor’s degree in biology. He settled in Gaston in 1963, moving
to Dundee earlier this year.
He pursued a 27-year career with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service,
which included research, refuge management and flying. He was also a
lifetime member of the National Association of Retired Federal
Employees.
He enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, building and travel.
Survivors include: wife Phyllis of Gaston; son Bradley Larsen of
Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Kimberly Wood of Shalimar, Fla., and
Rebecca Beemer of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Zion
Lutheran Church in Newberg.

Robert Wong
Robert Soo Yuen Wong, formerly of Newberg, died Aug. 26, 2007, in
Milwaukie. He was 91.
He was born Wong Soo Yuen in Canton province, China, and immigrated
to the United States at age 12, making his home in Portland.
He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II, stationed
aboard the USS Vixen from 1942-45. Following his service in the
Navy, he returned to Portland.
In 1948, he married Marilyn Mae. She preceded him in death in 2005.
He owned and operated a restaurant in Portland before moving to
Newberg in 1968, where he owned and operated Darby’s Restaurant
until his retirement in the 1980s.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Steven, and a daughter,
Geraldine Sheely.
Survivors include: sons Edwin and Gary; daughter Shari; brothers
Lee and Henry; sisters May Oka, Lillian Okazaki, Dorothy Leung and
Violet Yee; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon Sept. 6 at Lincoln Memorial

Carolyn J. Gaylord
Carolyn Jean Gaylord of Newberg died Aug. 24, 2007. She was 76.
She was born Nov. 6, 1930, in Carlton to Errol and Velma (Fouts)
Bryan. She attended Cleveland High School in Portland.
She married Larry Meier, raising six children with him before
divorcing. She later remarried Frayne “Bud” Gaylord, living in
Forest Grove, Beaverton and Yamhill before moving to a Newberg care
home.
She enjoyed visits to the beach, and her ashes were scattered there
at her request.
Survivors include: ex-husband Larry Meier of Prineville; sons Scott
Meier of Bakersfield, Calif., David Meier of Forest Grove, Mark
Meier of Hillsboro, Jeff Meier of McMinnville and Larry Meier of
Yamhill; daughter Michelle Holman of Portland; 14 grandchildren and
15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bud in 1992.

Patricia A. Bilodeau
Patricia Ann Bilodeau, formerly of McMinnville, died Aug. 26, 2007,
in Portland. She was 72.
She was born Oct. 23, 1934, in LaCrosse, Wis., to Quentin and Alma
Zinsmaster. She grew up in LaCrosse. In 1953, she married Francis
Bilodeau and settled in McMinnville after visiting the area on
honeymoon.
She earned a registered nurse’s degree from Chemeketa Community
College in 1972 and worked as a nurse in Newberg and McMinnville
hospitals and for the Yamhill County Health Department.
In 1987, she and her husband moved to Newport, buying property near
Yaquina Head. She worked as a nurse with the Lincoln County Health
Department, retiring in 1992, after which she and her husband spent
winters in Yuma, Ariz.
Survivors include: husband Francis; sons, Lawrence and Joe, both of
Newport, and Bruce of Dayton; daughters, Anne Schmidt of Tigard and
Elizabeth Young of Grand Prairie, Texas; brother Quentin Zinsmaster
of Bloomer, Wis.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. today (Saturday) at St.
James Catholic Church in McMinnville. Internment will take place at
Eureka Pioneer Cemetery in Newport.

Edna Cutsforth
Edna Cutsforth of Newberg died Aug. 27, 2007, at a local hospital.
She was 67.
She was born June 2, 1940, in Greenbrier, Ark., to Bryan and
L.D. (Jennings) Ogles. She moved to Newberg with her family in 1951.
She was married to Claude Maerz in 1956, divorcing in 1972. She
later married Claude Gash and moved to Fresno, Calif., but later
returned to Newberg and married Mr. Cutsforth until they divorced.
She attended St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg and worked as an
aide at Friendsview Manor and as an insurance agent in Tigard. She
enjoyed traveling and the music of Elvis Presley.
Survivors include: sons, Timothy of Portland and Bryan of Bagdad,
Ariz.; daughter Cynthia McClintick of Newberg; brother Jiles Ogles
of Newberg; sister Docia Vagnerini of Madras; nine grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.

Salvatore Danna
Salvatore “Sam” Danna of Sherwood died Aug. 27, 2007. He was 84.
He was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Portland. He attended Benson High
School. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, after which he began
a produce route serving northeast Portland, Scappose and St. Helens.
In 1948, he married Rose Marie Monaco. She preceded him in death in
April.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and visiting the Oregon
Coast, and was an avid outdoorsman.
Survivors include: son David of Rochester, Mich.; daughters,
Christine Snodgrass of Lake Oswego and Joanne Santee of Tualatin;
brother Joseph Danna; sister Josephine Piro; six grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.

Ruby J. Fryer
Ruby Jean Fryer of Newberg died Aug. 27, 2007. She was 79.
She was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Creston, Iowa, to O.J. and Viola
(Morris) Garrick. She moved with her family to Newberg, where she
attended grade and high school.
In 1949, she married Wayne Fryer in Seattle. They have lived in
Dundee and Newberg for the past five years.
She was a homemaker and worked in Safeway stores. She also worked
in real estate and owned and operated an antique store in Dundee.
She enjoyed bingo, trips to Spirit Mountain Casino, reading and
spending time with her family.
Survivors include: husband Wayne of Newberg; sons, Chuck of Newberg
and Mitch of Dundee; daughters Sue Schatz of Boise, Idah,o and
Sherry Johnson; sisters, Betty Erb and Jessie Ellis, both of
Newberg; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Aug. 30 at Attrell’s Newberg
Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Frank Lednicky officiating.
Paul O. Miller
Paul Oscar Miller of Sherwood died Aug. 28, 2007. He was 85.
He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Olean, Mo., to Jacob and Mable
Miller. He moved to Oregon with his family in the 1930s, settling in
the Metzger area.
He married June Wright in the late 1940s. The family lived in the
Sheridan-Willamina area until 1963, when they moved to Sherwood. In
1968, he started a local excavation business, Miller and Sons
Contractors, which he ran until his retirement in 2006.
He was preceded in death by his wife June in 1990. The following
year, he married Janet Jenkins.
He was an elder in the Newberg congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses
from 1970 until his death.
Survivors include: wife Janet of Sherwood; sons, Jay and Tom of
Tualatin; daughters, Merlyne of Newberg and Patricia Berk of
Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, Earl of Portland and Ted of Milwaukie;
sister Bonnie Miller-Choate of Vancouver; nine grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) in the
Newberg Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. A private burial took
place Friday at Gibbs Cemetery.

Almeda M. Hutchins
Almeda Marie Hutchins, formerly of Newberg, died Aug. 8,
2007, in Conroe, Texas. She was 85.
She was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Newman Grove, Neb., to Daniel and
Gussie (Knutson) Freeberg. She attended Northwest Nazarene College
in Nampa, Idaho. On May 15, 1943, she married Charles Hutchins. The
couple settled in Oregon, where she worked as a telephone operator
and owned Chuck’s Coffee Shop in Newberg.
Survivors include: son Mike Hutchins of Willis, Texas; daughters, Sandra
Taylor of Springfield, Mo., and Nancy Kutcher of Palmdale, Calif.;
seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002.
A private family service was held Aug. 18 at her son Mike’s home in
Texas.

Alberta L. Whitten
Alberta Louise Whitten of Newberg died Aug. 22, 2007. She was 79.
She was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Spokane, Wash., to Burt and Emily
(Shorter) Adams. She graduated from high school in Spokane.
On July 29, 1949, she married Eugene Whitten. The couple settled in
Newberg, where she worked as a homemaker.
She was a member of the Newberg Church of Christ and enjoyed
gardening, swimming and church activities.
Survivors include: sons, Rick of Benton City, Wash., and Brad of
Kaneohi, Hawaii; daughters, Beverly Huard of Medford and Tami Gaumer
of Newberg; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene in 1984, sister
Marion Gerber in 2005, mother Emily Adams in 1981 and father Burt
Adams in 2000.
A memorial service was held Aug. 28 at the Newberg Church of
Christ.

Rob Roy
Rob Roy of Newberg died Aug. 16, 2007. He was 71.
He was born March 9, 1936, in Pendleton to Ted and Barbara Roy. A
musician from an early age, he attended the University of Oregon and
earned a master’s degree in music from Columbia University in New
York.
He worked for 17 years as choral instructor at Pendleton High
School, where he wrote and produced award-winning musicals and choir
recitals. He also traveled to Scotland to assist with a school music
program there. He resided in eastern Washington before settling in
Newberg in 2004.
Survivors include: three daughters; one son and seven
grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 2 in GodSong
Community Church in Newberg.

Donald K. Saxton
Dr. Donald K. Saxton of Sherwood died Aug. 13, 2007, of kidney
cancer. He was 63.
He was born March 17, 1944, to Mainard and Dorothy Saxton. He grew
up in Boise, Idaho, and Portland. He graduated from Hillsboro High
School in 1963.
He attended Portland State University, graduating in 1968, and
served two years in the U.S. Army before enrolling in the Pacific
University College of Optometry, earning his medical degree in 1974.
He opened his first practice in Beaverton, with a second office in
Sherwood in 1975. In 1985, he founded ABC Vision Source in Aloha. He
also served as an adjunct faculty member at Pacific University and a
consultant to the Washington County Education Service Division.
He specialized in developmental vision therapy, diagnosing and
treating vision problems that caused learning disabilities and
providing vision care to underprivileged children. He provided free
vision screening clinics through the Sherwood Lions Club and
traveled to Ecuador as part of a volunteer medical team.
He enjoyed hiking, camping, gardening and bicycling, making several
bicycle trips through the Swiss Alps and participating in eight
Cycle Oregon journeys. He also sponsored several youth softball and
baseball teams.
Survivors include: companion Jan Sanderson of Sherwood; sons, Chris
of Newberg and Kevin of Portland; daughters, Anne-Marie Saxton of
San Francisco and Rebecca Baird of Beaverton; mother Dorothy of
Hillsboro; brother Dale of Hillsboro; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Sherwood
Community Friends Church, 23264 S.W. Main St.

Robert H. Lewis
Robert Harvey Lewis of Newberg died Aug. 11, 2007. He was 51.
He was born Aug. 20, 1955, in Portland to Ronald and Helen (Schallek)
Lewis. He grew up in Fossil and graduated from high school in
Milwaukie.
He attended Clackamas Community College for three years and worked
for Gunderson Ship Building Company for 20 years as a security
guard.
On Oct. 14, 1983, he married Jerri Lee Bethell. The couple made
their home in Milwaukie, moving to Newberg six years ago.
He enjoyed hunting, diving, golf and using firearms. He volunteered
as a youth sports coach.
Survivors include: wife Jerri of Dallas; son Anthony of Newberg;
mother Helen; and brothers, Ted of Lafayette and Jim Huffman of
Bisbee, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Theresa.
A memorial service was held Aug. 18 at Lafayette Community Church
with Pastor Shawn Strong officiating.
Brownibel Talbott
Brownibel Talbott of Newberg died Aug. 14, 2007. She was 92.
She was born June 24, 9195, in Corsicana, Texas, to Louis and Genie
Cole. She attended John Brown University and Wheaton College.
In 1936, she married Gene Talbott, then a student at Dallas
Theological Seminary. The couple lived in Belfair, Wash., before
moving to Portland in the 1940s. She graduated from Portland State
College in 1956 and taught for the Portland and Beaverton school
districts. In 1969, she and her husband moved to a farm in Banks,
coming to Newberg in 1993.
She was a member of the Portland C.S. Lewis Society and enjoyed
animals, reading and gardening.
Survivors include: sons, Thomas of Salem, David of Portland and
Stephen of Ghent, N.Y; daughters, Connie Blattner and Cathy Thienes,
both of Newberg, and Jeanee Keenan of Seattle; 15 grandchildren and
13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2003.

Kenneth R. Woods
Kenneth R. Woods of Lafayette died Aug. 14, 2007. He was 73.
He was born March 16, 1934, in St. Louis, Mo., to Kenneth and
Aurelia (Littrest) Woods. In 1953, he moved to Long Beach, Calif. He
married Lilian Bates on May 5, 1956, in Long Beach. The couple lived
in Garden Grove and Corona, Calif.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1962, then worked for
Rockwell International, where he assembled and inspected the Apollo
lunar modules.
In 1969, the couple moved to Oregon and he worked for the Newberg
Police Department from 1973 to 1980, settling in Lafayette in 1986.
He also worked for Tektronics and as a security guard at St. Vincent
Hospital, retiring in 1999.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, target shooting, baseball and reading.
He was a member of the Lafayette Community Church.
Survivors include: wife Lillian of Lafayette; sons, Jeffrey of Van
Nuys, Calif., Warren of McMinnville and Glen of Gresham; daughter
Pamela Steimarts of Lafayette; brother Gary of Keizer and five
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.

Ellis B. Finch
Dr. Ellis Finch, a former Newberg resident, died Aug. 7, 2007, in
Anacortes, Wash. He was 89.
He was born May 10, 1918, in Sumatra, Mont., to David and Maude
(Smith) Finch. He was raised in Tacoma, Wash. During World War II,
he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Biloxi and USS Concord,
earning the rank of lieutenant commander.
He practiced medicine as a physician and surgeon in Newberg and
Seattle.
He enjoyed golf and shot a hole-in-one at Sand Point Country Club
in 1964.
Survivors include: sisters, Helen Adams, Dorothy Decker and Bonnie
Finch; sons, William and Michael; daughters, Christine Morrell,
Sandra Zweifel and Jennifer Finch; stepsons, Eric and Damon Swanson;
stepdaughter Christine Thatcher; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by wife June, brother Bill and son Robert.
A burial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Willamette
National Cemetery in Portland.
Katherine Brown
Katherine Brown of Newberg died Aug. 6, 2007, of pancreatic cancer.
She was 56.
She was born Feb. 8, 1951, in Portland to John and Helen Kirkland
in Portland. She attended Marshall High School and Portland State
University. In 1984, she married Allyn Brown and moved to the
Newberg area, where he worked as an attorney. She worked as a
project assistant with the engineering firm David Evans and
Associates in Portland.
She was members of the Portland Yacht Club and active in local
community events. She enjoyed sailing, traveling, music, quilting,
book collecting, cooking, bee keeping and raising goats, among other
hobbies.
Survivors include: husband Allyn of Newberg; parents John and Helen
of King City; brother Jim of Yakima; sister Suzanne Kirkland of San
Diego, Calif.; son Ian Bald of Portland; daughter Jennifer Digby of
Portland; stepdaughters, Erin Ertz and Courtney Brown of Portland;
and three grandchildren.

Richard Hollenbeck
Richard LeRoy Hollenbeck of Salem, who has family in the area, died
May 7, 2007. He was 71.
He was born Feb. 26, 1936 in Yakima, Wash., to Richard and Mildred
(Lesh) Hollenbeck. He moved with his family at a young age to Trout
Lake, Wash. In 1953, he moved to Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho, where he
attended high school and studied music. He played guitar, piano and
trumpet, living and studying with professional musician Gordon
Dietsch.
In 1954, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS John A.
Boyle as an electronics technician in the South China Sea. He
received an honorable discharge in 1958 and married Janice Morris of
San Leandro, Calif. He worked in the electronics field, helping to
build prototype videotape recorders for Ampex, Sony and
International Video.
He returned to Oregon to attend school and earned an associate
degree in electrical engineering from Chemeketa Community College in
1988.
Survivors include: sister, Elaine Connor of St. Paul and Lois
Stevens of Trout Lake, Wash.; brother Bill of Portland; sons, Rich
of Moreno Valley, Calif., and John of Canyon Lake, Calif.; daughter
Peggy Stepe of Riverside, Calif., and six grandchildren.
His parents preceded him in death.

Kathryn J. Williams
Kathryn Jean Williams of Newberg died Aug. 10, 2007. She was 84.
She was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Bellingham, Wash., to Henry and Mary
(Johnson) Duxbury.
After graduating from Bellingham High School, she worked for the
“Filter Board” and monitored radio transmissions for enemy bombers.
On May 1, 1949, she married Carl Williams in Bremerton, Wash. She
worked for many years in retail sales. The couple moved throughout
Oregon while he worked as a heavy equipment operator in road
construction. They owned and operated a motel in Vale, and later
settled in Newberg.
She was a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Vale
and was also the past president and social director of the
Mountainview Mobile Home Park. She attended the Amity Church of
Christ and Dayton Christian Church, and devoted many years to making
quilts for the Veteran’s Administration.
Survivors include: niece Jo Anne Carleton; 29 other nieces and
nephews; 33 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and 50
great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews.
Her husband Carl preceded her in death in 1998.

Thomas Dewey Busch was stillborn on Aug. 4, 2007 in a Portland
hospital.
Survivors include: parents Jason and Jennifer Busch of Dundee;

grandparents, Hollis and Kim Adams of Newberg and Eugene and Darlene
Busch of Hillsboro; and great-grandmother Ginny Denton of Newberg.

Larry Ball
Larry Ball of Sherwood died Aug. 5, 2007. He was 63.
He was born July 1, 1944 in Yakima, Wash., and moved to Oregon with
his family, graduating from North Salem High School in 1962. He
attended the Salem Technical Vocation Community College (now
Chemeketa Community College), earning a degree in electronic
technology.
He served as a volunteer firefighter for the North Marion Fire
District while working for ADT Security Systems, then joined the
Tualatin Fire District (now Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue), where
he served as a firefighter for 11 years, earning the rank of acting
lieutenant.
In 1982, he returned to ADT as an area supervisor for the alarm
company, retiring in 1994. In that year he met Vicky Churchill, who
would become his life partner.
He worked briefly as a handyman in the Newberg-Dundee area and
opened a shop in Waldport before settling in Sherwood in 2004.
Survivors include: partner Vicky Churchill of Sherwood; son David of
Salem; daughter Katrina Ball of Dundee; brother Bill of Eagle,
Idaho; sister Darlene Osman of Selah, Wash.; and two grandsons.

Beverly Ann Fowler of Dundee died July 27, 2007. She was 77.
She was born Feb. 27, 1930, in Perrydale to Percy and Nellie (DeJong)
Zumwalt. She attended Oregon State University. She married Ronald
Bruce Fowler on July 13, 1958, in Reno.
She was interested in genealogy and history and was a member of the
Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of Mayflower
Descendants (John Howland chapter). She also enjoyed gardening.

Dirk Fowler of Dundee; sister Louella Porter of Salem; and two
grandchildren.

Richard G. McKay
Richard G. McKay died Aug. 3, 2007, at a Woodburn care home. He was
88.
He was born May 19, 1919, in St. Paul to Arthur and Grace (Murphy)
McKay. He graduated from Mount Angel Academy. He attended Mount
Angel Seminary, and seminary schools in Denver and New York, before
returning to the family farm in St. Paul, where he raised row crops
and grain until his retirement in 2005.
On Nov. 19, 1951, he married Viola Davidson in Portland.
He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church. He enjoyed raising
and showing Arabian horses, winning many trophies with his stock.

Wallace Davidson of St. Paul; brother Francis of Reno; sisters,

Kenneth Baines
Kenneth “Pat” Baines, a former Newberg resident, died June 26,
2007, in White City. He was 57.
He was born March 6, 1950, in Dallas, Texas, to William and Dora
(Winters) Baines. He graduated from Portland’s Jackson High School
in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army and worked in various
professions. He married Brenda Gumph in 1978; the couple later
divorced.
Survivors include: ex-wife Brenda; sons, Shawn and Adam of
Portland; brothers, Michael, Tim and Bill; sisters, Kerry Warren and
Kelly Holderby; and one grandchild.

Ellen L. Gochenour
Ellen Lorraine Gochenour of Dundee died July 27, 2007. She was 66.
She was born July 11, 1941, in Yakima, Wash., to Samuel and Lina
(Spratt) Clemmens. She attended school there and in Boise, Idaho. On
Aug. 31, 1964, she married Ronald Gochenour in Vancouver, Wash. The
couple lived in Portland and Dundee for the past 40 years.
She enjoyed gardening and working with handicapped children as a
member of the “Gad Abouts” volunteer group.
Survivors include: husband Ronald of Dundee; sons, Tom of Newberg
and Lee of Aloha; daughters, Peggy Travis of Newberg, Shawna Banke
of Aloha and Mary Williams of Seattle; brothers, Mark Clemmens of

Mary Bauman-Mirhady
Mary Louise Bauman-Mirhady, a philanthropist and donor to George
Fox University, died July 16, 2007, in Newport Beach, Calif. She was
77.
Mary was born in 1930 in Stayton to Henry and Lera Snoddy.
After selling their three lumber mills to Willamette Industries in
1974, the Baumans donated toward construction of a new auditorium on
the George Fox campus, finished in 1982, that bore their name,
Bauman Auditorium.
William Bauman served as a George Fox board member for 20 years,
many as the chairman of the development committee. He preceded her
in death in 1989.
Since her husband’s death she lived in both Portland and Corona Del
Mar, Calif. From 1990 on, she served as Chairwoman of The William H.
and Mary L. Bauman Foundation, which helped fund the Dougy Center,
Trillium Family Services, Boys and Girls Aid Society, The Salvation
Army West Women’s Shelter, the Doernbecher Childrens’ Hospital
childhood diabetes program and OHSU-Casey Eye Clinic for autoimmune
disease.
As a patron of the arts, she supported The Oregon Ballet, The
Portland Art Museum, The Portland Opera, The Oregon Symphony and The
Oregon Historical Society. A longtime member of the Pacific
Conference of the Evangelical Church, she provided donor support for
various conference programs in education, church extension,
coaching, clergy assessment and natural church development.
Survivors include: her second husband, Farhad Mirhady; sons, Bruce
and Paul Schwindt; daughters, Gay Salo and Julietta Bauman-Freres;
eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private services were held July 21 in Sweet Home. A celebration of
life will take place Aug. 8 at The Arlington Club in Portland.
Robert Delashmutt
Robert “Bob” Delashmutt of McMinnville died July 28, 2007. He was
83.
He was born March 11, 1924, in McMinnville to Victor and Louise (Ellersick)
Delashmutt. He graduated from McMinnville High School. He joined the
U.S. Army in 1942, serving in World War II. He was stationed in
Europe until 1945. On returning to Oregon, he became a carpenter,
building and remodeling houses in the McMinnville area. In 1947, he
married Dorothy Baker.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors.
Survivors include: wife Dorothy of McMinnville; son Steve of
Newberg; daughter Jeanne Henry of McMinnville; three grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren.

Clara Bostwick
Clara Bostwick of Newberg died July 26, 2007. She was 103.
She was born April 17, 1904, in Hamlin, Kan., to Franklin and Clara
(Swede) Kern. In 1920, she moved to North Dakota, where she began a
teaching career. She attended Northwest Nazarene College and Tabor
Bible College. She worked for an insurance business and the Federal
Relief Association during the Depression. She married Michael
Bostwick on June 25, 1948. The couple settled in Garden Grove,
Calif., where they lived until his death in 1973.
She moved to Newberg in 1983, becoming a resident of Friendsview
Retirement Center. She was active in the Church of the Nazarene and
worked as a Sunday school teacher. Family members said she kept in
touch with friends and acquaintances through frequent letters.
Survivors include: stepdaughters, Arlene Johnson of Harnett,
Calif., and Joyce Beebe of Riverside, Calif.; sister Anna Geer of
Lexington, Mich.; and nephew Dr. Stan Kern of Newberg.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Francis G. Tessman
Francis Grace Tessman of Newberg died July 28, 2007. She was 75.
She was born Aug. 28, 1931, in Sofia, N.M., to George and Grace
(Edwards) Stonebrink. She came to Oregon at the age of 16. She
attended school in Yamhill and moved to Portland, where she worked
for the telephone company. She married Louis Codiga and the couple
moved to California, returning to Yamhill in 1968.
The couple divorced and she moved to Vancouver, Wash., and married
Dean Tessman in 1973, settling in Newberg. She worked for the
Yamhill-Carlton Post Office until her retirement in 1993.
She enjoyed quilting, traveling, garage sales and spending time
with family. She was a member of the Gibbs Community Club.
Survivors include: husband Dean of Newberg; sons, John and Tim
Codiga of Newberg; daughters, Danita Stonebrink of Salem, Jill
Codiga of McMinnville and Amy Sagi of Newberg; stepson Tom Tessman

Vernon H. Bagley
Vernon Hall Bagley of Newberg died July 25, 2007. He was 96.
He was born July 13, 1911, in Portland to Walter and Martha (Owen)
Bagley. He attended school in the Knappa school district near
Astoria. He enrolled in Oregon State Agricultural College (now
Oregon State University), but left due to a lack of funds during the
Depression. In 1936, he married Laurinda Krocker.
Joining his father in the logging business, he later formed his own
company with sons Tim and Dan. He was active in church work,
starting several rural Sunday schools and serving as a lay pastor
for the Knappa Assembly of God Church.
He was preceded in death by wife Laura in 1963. He married Beth
Hockett in 1964.
In 1967, he moved to Newberg and began working for MAVE Co., a
manufacturer of nut harvesting equipment. He later worked in the
maintenance department of George Fox University.
He had a strong interest in missionary work and contributed to
several missions, including spending a summer with his wife working
at a World Gospel Mission site in Arizona. He served as the first
president of the Newberg chapter of the World Gospel Mission’s Men
With Vision, and as the secretary and treasurer of Newberg Optimist
Club.
He and his wife were also charter members of Volunteers on Wheels
and helped with projects at George Fox University and the Twin Rocks
and Quaker Hills camps.
Following his retirement, he worked as a buildings and grounds
manager for Spaulding Oaks, the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends
office and Friends Cemetery.
Survivors include: wife Beth of Newberg; son Daniel of Estacada;
six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his sister Donna Bagley and son Tim.

Robin M. Roy
Robin Moore Roy of Newberg died July 17, 2007. He was 76.
He was born Dec. 19, 1930, in Portland. He graduated from Grant
High School in 1948. He attended Lewis and Clark College as a music
major before enlisting in 1948 in the Marine Corps. Transferred to
active duty in 1950, he served in Korea, returning to the U.S. in
1952.
In 1967, he married Sarah “Betty” Garland. The couple resided in
Newberg and Redmond.
He was a life member of the NRA and the steam and pipe fitter’s
union, and a member of Newberg Christian Church.
He enjoyed music, hunting and coached Little League and Babe Ruth.
Survivors include: wife Sarah of Dundee; sons, Robin of Medford and
Martin of Portland; daughters, Kathy Lodge of Bend and Susy
Jefferson, Beth Edens and Colleen Heinonen of Dundee; 12
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Carl E. Adams of Newberg died July 15, 2007. He was 78.
He was born Dec. 7, 1928, in Lincoln, Neb., to Charlie and Thelma
Adams. He and served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1950.
In 1948, he married Dorothy Weber of Carlton. He worked for
Portland General Electric and the couple made their home in Newberg
for over 55 years
Survivors include: wife Dorothy of Newberg; sons Richard, Jeff and
Robert; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Theresa Vittoria
Theresa “Tess” Vittoria of Dundee died July 17, 2007. She was 81.
She was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Portland to Vincent and Grace (Mash)
Gimarelli. She attended school in Portland. She worked in the
Portland shipyards during World War II and married Vito “Vic”
Vittoria in 1949. They opened Vittoria’s Nursery in Portland in the
early 1950s. The couple moved to Dundee in 1966, bringing their
business with them. They operated Vittoria’s Nursery until retiring
in 1990.
Survivors include: son Guy of Dundee; brothers, James Gimarelli of
Portland and Gus Gimarelli of Fairfield, Calif.; sisters, Josephine
Grantao and Mary Petersen, both of Portland; three grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vic in 1991 and by

She lived briefly in Muskogee before marrying the Rev. Lester Muhly
in Kennewick, Wash. The couple pastored for Lutheran congregations
in Kadoka, S.D.; Aberdeen, Wash.; Olive, Calif.; Idaho Falls, Idaho;
and Santa Rosa, Calif., moving to Dundee upon their retirement.

Johnson. She attended high school in Duluth as well as St. Paul
Bible School.
She married Frank Wiens in July 11, 1947. The couple pastored
churches in Sawyer, N.D., Salem, Newberg, Baker City and La Grande.
She was a Sunday school teacher and choir member and supported her
husband in his ministry work.
She developed Alzheimer’s and was a resident of the Dallas
Retirement Health Care Center the past few years.

the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1996.
She enjoyed photography, gardening and needlework, and was a
prolific quilter.

Marjorie Fern Stalker of Newberg died July 15, 2007. She was 90.
She was born March 4, 1917, in Mohall, N.D., to Nealon and Alma
(Nelson) Dietz. She attended business school in Minot, N.D. The
family moved to Woodburn in 1935. She married her high school
sweetheart, Winferd Mace, in 1937.
She worked in the offices of Newberg Auto Freight and was a member

great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters Florence Mills in 2007 and
Marion McVey in 1986; and her parents.

Norvella A. Whitmer
Norvella Arlene Whitmer, formerly of Newberg, died July 8, 2007, in
an Arizona hospital. She was 68.
She was born Jan. 13, 1939, Brookings, S.D., to John and Neva (Lundin)
Wolfsmith. She graduated from Wilson High School in Portland in 1948
and married Ken Whealdon.
She married George Whitmer in 1986 and they retired from Newberg to
Fort Mohave, Ariz., in 1993, and to Bull Head City, Ariz.
Survivors include: husband George of Bull Head City, Ariz.; son
Jeffrey Whealdon of Astoria and daughter Robyn Balist.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Attrell’s
Newberg Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m.
Friday in Valley View Memorial Park.
The Rev. Glen E. McCollister
The Rev. Glen McCollister died July 9, 2007, at his home in Dundee.
He was 83.
He was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Raymond, Wash., to Ralph and Elizabeth
McCollister. The family moved to the Newberg area in 1925. He served
as a medic in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He attended
Glad Tidings Bible Institute (now Bethany University), graduating in
1949 with a ministerial degree. He served as a pastor in the towns
of Weaverville, Richmond and Arbuckle in California.
In 1950, he moved to Hawaii and married Ruth Garland one year
later. They started a church in Haleiwa, on the island of Oahu, in
1951. Together they ministered in churches in Kailua, Waimanalo and
Waialae-Kahala on Oahu and in Kahului on the island of Maui. In 1975
they started a preschool in Waialae-Kahala called “Kinder Campus”
which they owned and operated for the next 20 years.
They moved to Newberg in 1993. In 1995, the couple became directors
of Noah’s Ark Daycare and Preschool in McMinnville, where they
worked until 2005. They also established the Children’s Music
Station preschool, which will open this September in Dundee.
Survivors include: wife Ruth of Dundee; daughter Glenda; son Gordon
and granddaughter Malia.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Newberg
Family Life Church.

Winnie Love
Winnie Caroline Love died July 1, 2007, at a Newberg care facility.
She was 100.
She was born Nov. 14, 1906, in Prague, Okla., to William and Nettie
Ferris. She attended school in Stillwater, Okla. In 1925, she
married Arthur Akins. In 1944, she settled in Oregon and married
Henry French. The couple made their home in Newberg. He preceded her
in death in 1959. She married Norman Love in 1966; he preceded her
in death in 1967.
She enjoyed fishing and sports, especially the Portland Trail
Blazers.
Survivors include: many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by children Phyllis Welch, Wilbur Akins
and Raymon Akins.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 2:30 p.m.
today (Saturday) at the home of Ray Welch in Newberg. A private
committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Cemetery in Newberg.

Thomas Bernard Baggenstos of Newberg died July 3, 2007. He was 55.
He was born July 20, 1951, in Portland to Bernard and Ora (Oberg)
Baggenstos.
He graduated from Canby High School.
He moved to Newberg in 1973 after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.
He worked for his father in the drywall business until 1977, then
went into business for himself.
In 1980, he married Laurel Ingram in Scholls.
Survivors include: wife Laurel of Newberg; sons, Christopher and
Andrew of Newberg; daughter Jessica Rodriguez of San Antonio, Texas;
sisters, Cecelia Cullison of Canby, Joanie Kruse of Aurora, Lisa Erb
of Dayton, Janine Bruce of Brandon and Theresa Baggenstos of
Beaverton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held July 9 at Mountainside Cemetery in

Maynard M. Barr
Maynard Miles Barr of Dundee died July 1, 2007. He was 75.
He was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Decatur, Neb., to Melvin and Ruth
(Miles) Barr. He attended high school in Gaston. In 1953, he married
F. Carole Hudson. He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a
manager for W.L. May Company and Oldsfield Appliances, retiring in
1993.
Survivors include: wife Carole of Dundee; son Steven of Aloha;
daughter Sharon Rao of Wilsonville; brothers, John of Springfield
and Darrell of Aloha; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son Scott in 1983.

Evelyn Rodgers
Evelyn Rodgers died June 27, 2007, at a local nursing home. She was
84.
She was born July 7, 1922, in Ryder, Okla., to Jesse and Carrie
(Byrd) James. She attended school in Adaire, Okla., graduating from
high school in 1941.
She married Guy Rodgers in 1941 in Choteau, Okla. The couple moved
to California in 1946, settling in the San Joaquin Valley.
She worked building airplanes during World War II. She was a member
of the First Baptist Church in Strathmore, Calif. She was a
homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, making most of her children’s
clothes.
Survivors include: daughters, Linda Long and Carole Roscoe, both of
Newberg; sister Ora’Lee Minter of Richland, Wash.; nine
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001.
A funeral service was held July 3 in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral
Chapel with Pastor Tom Frisinger officiating. Committal was at
Mountainside Cemetery in Scholls.
Lisa Baurer
Lisa Anne Baurer, who has family in Newberg, died of a heart attack
June 27, 2007, at a Portland hospital. She was 42.
She was born in 1965 to Donald Duncan and Constance Johnson. She
was raised in Maryland, returning to Hillsboro in 1984. In 1989, she
married Michael Baurer.
Survivors include: husband Michael of Newberg; son Nick of Newberg;
father and stepmother, Donald and Auria Duncan of Florida; mother
and stepfather Constance and Lloyd Johnson of Hillsboro; stepsister
Tiana Johnson of Mercer Island, Wash.; stepbrother Daniel Johnson of
La Habra, Calif.; and numerous aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her brother, David Duncan of Maryland.

Edna Myrtle Burton
Edna Myrtle Burton of Newberg died June 11, 2007. She was 89.
She was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Greenleaf, Idaho, to William and
Edna (Antrim) Altig. She graduated from Greenleaf Friends Academy in
1935. She attended Portland Bible Institute from 1937 to 1938. She
married Loren Burton on June 18, 1938. The couple lived in Vale and
several other towns in Oregon and Idaho, where her husband served as
a pastor. In 1950, they moved to Greenleaf, returning to Newberg in
1989.
She served as mayor of Greenleaf and as a member of the city
council. She was involved in the PTA, 4-H and Home Extension clubs.
She was also a member of the Friends church and in women’s
missionary and fellowship groups, as well as Sunday school programs.
Survivors include: sons, Sterling of Boise, Daryl of Newberg and
Vaughan of Chicago; daughters, Lorene Hopper of Newberg, Karen
Merrell of Nampa, Idaho, and Melodie Burton of Newberg; brothers,
Kenneth Altig of Boise and Caleb Altig of Montana; 13 grandchildren;
17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Loren in 2001; her
parents; brothers Ralph, Robert and Francis; and sister Betty
Roberts.

Donald L. Crete of Newberg died June 18, 2007. He was 79.
He was born Jan 16, 1928, to August and Tillie Crete in St. Paul,
and moved to Newberg in 1936, where he attended school.
He served in the U.S. Navy and worked at several jobs in the
Newberg area, primarily the Westnut packing plant in Dundee.
He married Peggy Fugate in 1960.
Survivors include his wife Peggy; sons, Richard, Randy, Kelly and
Chris; and one grandchild.

Lucille D. Orcutt
Lucille Dora Orcutt died June 17, 2007, at a local care center. She
was 91.
She was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Kaw City, Okla., to Ira and Pearl
(Pope) Haughn. She grew up in Oklahoma. She married Vernon Orcutt on
April 29, 1935, in Neosho, Mo. They settled in Oregon’s Hood River
Valley in 1943, living outside Pine Grove. She assisted her husband
with his wallpaper-hanging business and attended the Mt. Hood
Assembly of God Church.
She enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: husband Vernon of Newberg; daughters, Mary
Brewer of Miami, Okla., Dora Bailey of Dundee and Linda Hazen of
Willard, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren and 19
great-great-grandchildren.

Keith Owen Thomas Sr. of Newberg died June 14, 2007. He was 80.
He was born Aug. 28, 1926, in Eugene to Owen and Eleanor (Squires)
Thomas. In 1945, he joined the U.S. Army, serving during World War
II. He moved to the Portland area in 1984, where he worked as an
apartment manager. In 1985, he married Jeanne Olsen in Surprise,
Ariz. She preceded him in death in 1996.
Survivors include: sons, Raymond and Keith Jr.; daughters, Mary
Jane Gibson, Gloria DeFoor and Beverley Sauser; sister Jacqulyn
Phillips; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and three

Delbert A. Denos
Delbert Anthony Denos of Dundee died June 15, 2007. He was 42.
He was born April 14, 1965, to Alonzo and Beverly (Herman) Denos in
Reno, Nev. His family moved to Lake Oswego in 1979, and he graduated
from Lake Oswego High School in 1983.
He attended the University of Oregon from 1983 to 1985, and
graduated from Western Culinary Institute in Portland in 1988.
A resident of Dundee since 2001, he worked as a chef and restaurant
manager in the Portland area until 2005, when he became general
manager for Radio Shack in McMinnville and Newberg.
He was a member of the Memorial Christian Gospel Assemblies Church,
and enjoyed traveling and cooking.
Survivors include: wife Carmen, son Keldon and daughter Anna, all
of Dundee; father Alonzo of Carson City, Nev.; mother Beverly of
Tualatin; brother Jason of Bloomington, Ill.; and sister Heide Denos
of Raleigh, N.C.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the
Christian Gospel Assemblies Church, 14000 NE Hwy 240., with Rev.

Madelle Canaday
Madelle Canaday of Newberg died June 14, 2007. She was 91.
She was born Dec. 10, 1915, in Cottage Grove to George and Betty
(McLean) Kappauf.
She married Claude Canaday in 1965 in Newberg. She worked as a bank
teller and loan officer at First National (now Wells Fargo) Bank for
more than 35 years.
Survivors include her close friends Tom and
Sharon Vo of Newberg.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979.
Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Joyful Servant
Lutheran Church, with Pastor Tom Struck officiating.
Cynthia J. Stouffer
Cynthia Jean Stouffer of Newberg died June 14, 2007. She was 57.
She was born July 20, 1949 to Donald and Norma (Cobb) Stewart in
Ashland, and moved with her family to Newberg in 1952.
In 1985, she moved to the Bay Area in California, where she married
Jerry Stouffer in 1986.
In 1993, the couple returned to Newberg, where she attended St.
Michael’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include: husband Jerry of Newberg; mother Norma Stewart
of Newberg; stepdaughter Ellyn Stouffer of Newberg; brother Robert
Stewart of Tacoma; and sister Donna Blalock of Monmouth.

Frances Lillian Zimmerman died June 11, 2007. She was 95.

in Eugene. Her family moved to Portland when she was young, and she
graduated from Franklin High School.
She worked as a dental office manager for 25 years, and was a
member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Docco
Club and Cameo. She also enjoyed genealogy.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edward.
Survivors include: sons Steven of Dundee and Gordon of Oakridge;
daughter Susan Justis of Baton Rouge, La.; 13 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Her funeral was held June 15 at the Newberg Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. Internment took place in Rose City Cemetery in
Portland.

Bonnie B. Farr
Bonnie Belle Farr, formerly of Newberg, died June 8, 2007, at a
McMinnville care home. She was 85.
She was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Pratt, Kan., to Winfred and Ellen
Swonger. She moved with her family to Newberg in 1936. She married
Virgil Farr in 1939. In 1960, she graduated from beauty school and
worked for Marge Young, later opening her own shop.
Survivors include: son Tommy Farr of West Linn; daughters, Linda
Osborne and Virginia Lille, both of Newberg, and Mary Johnson of
Portland; brother Jack Swonger; 11 grandchildren, 20
great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and several
brothers and sisters.
At her request no funeral services were scheduled.
Edna Shephard
Edna Shephard of Newberg died June 8, 2007. She was 95.
She was born June 10, 1911, in Winton, Calif., to Louis and Hulda (Karlson)
Skadsheim. She attended Columbia Academy, graduating in 1930, and
Walla Walla College. She married Joseph Shephard on Jan. 21, 1936.
She was a homemaker. She enjoyed writing poetry and crocheting.
Survivors include: sister Martha Pasko of Dundee and brother Amos
Skadsheim of Modesto, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977 and by sisters
Esther Johnson in 2004 and Ruby Galusha in 2000.
A funeral service was held June 14 in Modesto. Burial was at
Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, Calif.
David A. Snip
David A. Snip of Newberg died June 12, 2007. He was 49.
He was born March 6, 1958 in Santa Ana, Calif. He moved with his
family to Newberg in 1970, graduating from Newberg High School in
1976. He joined the Navy in 1977 and served aboard the USS
Constellation. He earned three Bronze Stars, a Meritorious Unit
Commendation and two Navy Expeditionary Medals. Retiring in 1987, he
returned to Newberg.
He enjoyed collecting football memorabilia and antiques, painting,
and deep-sea fishing.
Survivors include: mother Faye London of Newberg: stepsisters, Jody
Rosenberry of Dayton and Carrie Austin of Beaverton; aunts, Pat
Thomas of Jolette, Ill., and Ann Johnston of Bellevue, Wash.; uncle

Herbert C. Rosen, formerly of Newberg, died May 21, 2007, at a
Gresham care home. He was 85.
He was born April 28, 1922, in New Leipzig, N.D. In 1941, he
married Julia Bain in North Dakota. He worked as a millwright. He
lived in Newberg from 1948 to 1974, then settled in Sisters.
Survivors include: wife Julia of Gresham; son LeRoy of Hood River:
daughters, Tanna Chapman of Boring and Janette Murdock of Soldotna,
Alaska; brothers, Henry, Ted and Ruben; sisters, Martha Jahnke,

Linda M. Williamson
Linda Marie Williamson of Sherwood died May 30, 2007, at Providence
Newberg Medical Center. She was 57.
She was born Dec. 19, 1949, in Los Angeles to Luciano and Nellie (Benham)
Raineri. She moved with her family to Yamhill when she was 14. She
lived in Newport, Tigard, Newberg and St. Paul before settling in
Sherwood. She served in the U.S. Navy and was a Girl Scout troop
leader and member of the American Legion. She enjoyed jewelry
making.

Russell C. Bony
Russell Clyde Bony of McMinnville died June 3, 2007. He was 75.
He was born Oct. 1, 1931, in McMinnville to Clyde and Ruth (Parker)
Bony. He was raised in Yamhill and graduated from Yamhill Union High
School in 1949. On Aug. 15, 1952, he married Peggy Williams in the
Yamhill Christian Church.
He worked for Williams Freightline as a truck driver until 1953,
when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. After
leaving the service, he worked for the Diesel Service Unit company
in Portland and returned to Yamhill in 1960, where he worked for
C.F. Laughlin Logging. He also worked for the Carlton Truck Stop,
retiring in 1996.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, fixing things and served
as a bus driver for the Church on the Hill in McMinnville.
Survivors include: wife Peggy of McMinnville; son Kevin of Keizer;
daughters, Diane Cappoen of Yamhill and Carmen Banke of McMinnville;
and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sister Lorraine Olmstead and grandson
Scott Banke.
A funeral was held June 7 at the Church on the Hill in McMinnville
with Pastor Jerry Moen officiating. Disposition was at Evergreen

University, where she earned a degree in physical education.
She had two daughters with her first husband, but the couple later
separated. As a single mother, she worked several jobs to make ends
meet.
In 2004, she married John Boaz in Las Vegas.
She enjoyed traveling and was an avid horse rider.
Survivors include: husband John of Newberg; daughters, Jessica
Crocker and Olivia Wall, both of Portland; brother Henri Angle of
Portland; sisters, Linda McKenna of Salem and Marietta Rodriguez of

Ethel A. Bixby
Ethel Amy Bixby of Newberg died June 1, 2007. She was 90.
She was born Sept. 10, 1916, in Greenleaf, Idaho, to Clarence and
Mary Dailey. She moved to Newberg with her family in 1919, where she
attended the Friends and Free Methodist churches. In 1938, she
married Harland Bixby.
She began making drapes in her garage in the 1950s and formed a
partnership with Bill Spangler in 1959, opening Newberg Interiors on
South College Street. She continued to head the company until
recently, when her son Marvin took over.
She was named Career Woman of the Year in 1968 by the Newberg
Business and Professional Women’s Club. She also served on the board
of directors and as secretary for the Newberg Chamber of Commerce
from 1968 to 1969.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harland in 1967. She
married Pat Hodson in 1994; he preceded her in death in 1995. She
was also preceded in death by son Robert, two brothers and one
sister.
Survivors include: son Marvin of Newberg; daughter Eleanor Hall of
Keizer; sister Ruth Barbour of McMinnville; five grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the
Northside Community Church in Newberg.

On Sept. 5, 1953, she married Noel Guedon. The couple made their
home in Newberg, where she worked as a medical assistant to a local
doctor.
She enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Venola Avis “Nolie” Clarke of Newberg died May 23, 2007. She was
85.
She was born June 6, 1921, in Newton, Kan., to Elton and Etna
Turner. On Oct. 9, 1937, she married James Clarke. The couple made
their home in Prosser, Wash., where she worked as a cook for the
Prosser School District and assisted her husband in his custom
homebuilding business.
She enjoyed hosting family get-togethers and racing horses in
Washington, Oregon and Omaha, Neb.
Survivors include: brother Marion Turner of Nevada; sister Genny
McElroy of Colorado; son Larry Clark of Newberg; daughter Joyce
Johnson of McMinnville; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son Elton; two brothers;
a sister and two grandchildren.
A funeral service was held May 26 in the Prosser Cemetery.
Maurice H. Eide
Maurice Harold Eide, formerly of Newberg, died May 26, 2007, in
Woodland, Wash. He was 74.
He was born Aug. 14, 1932, in Belle Fourche, S.D., to Orin and
Clara (Hulce) Eide. His family moved to Newberg in 1947 and he
graduated from Newberg High School in 1950.
He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation, receiving an honorable
discharge in 1953. He worked for the Oregon State Police, Yamhill
County Sheriff’s Office and Northwest Marine Iron Works in Portland.
Prior to his death, he worked at the Lewis River Golf Club.
He was a member of the Steamfitters Local #290. He enjoyed hunting,
fishing and tinkering around his home.
Survivors include: wife Merla of Woodland; brother Sterling of
Kenai, Alaska; sisters, Janet Umfleet of Newberg, Arlie Smith of
Grants Pass and Judy Garland of Vashon, Wash.; six children; nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) in the
Ridgefield Church of the Nazarene, 747 Pioneer St., Ridgefield,
Wash.
Lucile F. Sheppard
Lucile F. Sheppard of Newberg died May 27, 2007. She was 94.
She was born June 23, 1912, in Little Rock, Ark., to Joseph and
Nina (Henderson) Lowry. Orphaned at an early age, she was raised by
her grandparents and in an orphanage. She worked as a practical
nurse for most of her life.
In 1929 she married Earl Adkins in Los Angeles. He preceded her in
death in 1932. She married Thomas Ryan in 1934. They settled in
Toledo, Ohio. They divorced in 1955. In 1956, she married Leo
Ritchie. He preceded her in death in 1960. She returned to Los
Angeles, where she married Hiram Sheppard in 1963. He preceded her
in death in 1970.
She enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, birds and pets.
Survivors include: son Thomas Ryan of Chattsworth, Calif.; daughter
Eunice Longfellow of Newberg; 11 grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by daughter Jackie Warren; three brothers
and two sisters.
A private family service was held. Arrangements are in care of Macy
and Son Funeral Directors of McMinnville.
Phillippe Robert
Phillippe Twinley Lynch Robert of Newberg died May 26, 2007. He was
88.
He was born Sept. 12, 1918, to Clark and Theresine Robert in Mahe,
on Victoria Island in the Seychelles, where he attended school.
He worked as a refrigeration technician in the aerospace industry
before serving with the British Army during World War II.
He married Carline Bouchereau on Seychelles Island on November 23,
1961. After retiring in 1980, they moved to the United States in
1992.
A Newberg resident since 2001, he was a member of St. Peter
Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Survivors include: his wife Carline; sons Norbert and Peter
Bouchereau of the Seychelles; daughters Luncy Pretty of Australia,
Julita Delpeche of South Africa, Lydia Sparks of Newberg, Liletta
Wheatman of Colorado Springs, Colo., Luzette Layi of Hawaii,
Rosemary Riddle of California and Jane Young of California; brother
Hamilton Robert of the Seychelles; 13 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
His funeral mass was held May 28 at St. Peter Catholic Church, with
Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal took place at Valley View
Memorial Park in Newberg.

Dorothy C. High
Dorothy Cleo High of Newberg died May 22, 2007. She was 85.
She was born April 28, 1922, to William and Ada (Mortimer) Charlot
in Huron, S.D. He graduated from Hitchcock High School in Hitchcock,
S.D.
She married Harlo High in South Dakota and was a homemaker and
assisted in running her husband’s farm. In 1950, they settled in
Rapid City, S.D. The couple moved to Newberg in 1974.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975. After his death,
she worked at several local jobs, including as a cook for
Friendsview Manor.
She enjoyed crocheting flowers, the ocean and spending time with
friends and grandchildren.
Survivors include: son Bill of Pe Ell, Wash., and two nieces and
nephews.
A cryptside service was held May 29 at Valley View Memorial Park in
Newberg with Pastor Peter Blank officiating.

E. Lorraine Woodside
Edythe “Lorraine” Woodside of Newberg died May 20, 2007. She was
82.
She was born July 22, 1924, in Oroville, Calif., to Joseph and
Thelma (Kerr) Holcomb. During World War II she worked at Mare Island
Naval Yard in Vallejo, Calif. After earning a degree in business,
she worked for Dammasch State Hospital in Wilsonville. In 1951, she
married Wesley “Bud” Woodside.
She enjoyed traveling and went on cruises to Panama and Mexico, as
well as road trips through Arizona and the West. She also enjoyed
playing bunco and was active in local women’s groups.
Survivors include: brothers, Charles and Ray Holcomb of California;
sisters, Margery Marshall and Martha Vance of California; daughter
Cheryl Woodside of Newberg; five grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) in the
Promise Church — Dundee Women’s Hall on Highway 99W in Dundee.
James M. Rumph
James Marcus Rumph of Lafayette died May 24, 2007. He was 85.
He was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Silverwood, Mich., to Hillard and
Ethel (Thompson) Rumph. He attended school in Pontiac, Mich. He
served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked as a
carpenter and truck driver. He moved to Oregon in 1964, where he
worked as a cattle breeder. In June 1965, he married Helen. The
couple made their home in Newberg for 24 years, later moving to
Dayton and Lafayette.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include: wife Helen of Lafayette.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Viewing and visitation hours are 9 a.m. to noon today (Saturday) at
Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be held
at 1 p.m. today at the Newberg Friends Cemetery with pastor Mickey

Mortimer Ross
Mortimer Ross of Dundee died May 17, 2007. He was 88.
He was born Feb. 18, 1919, in New York to Michael and Margaret
(Levy) Ross. He grew up in the Bronx. He enlisted in the U.S. Air
Force in 1941, serving as an airplane and engine mechanic. He was
honorably discharged in 1945.
He married Lucille Peterson in Great Falls, Mont., on Nov. 18,
1945. They settled in Forest Grove, where he worked for the local
branch of the U.S. Post Office, retiring in 1980 after 26 years.
He was a member of the Forest Grove Elks Lodge. He enjoyed
woodworking, camping and dancing. He and his wife wintered in
Arizona, where they enjoyed off-roading.
Survivors include: wife Lucille of Dundee; son Dennis Ross;
daughters Deanne Comfort, Brenda Seymour and Penny Mann; five
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. May 31 in the Mt. Olive
Lutheran Church in Forest Grove.
Ronald J. Willard
Ronald John Willard of Carlton died May 17, 2007. He was 65.
He was born March 28, 1942, in Lebanon to Lloyd and Frances
(Peters) Willard. He graduated from Lebanon Union High School in
1960. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and
was stationed in Japan, receiving his discharge in 1966. He married
Loretta Copeland on Nov. 7, 1970, in Lebanon. He worked for Roseburg
Forest Products for 35 years, retiring in 2004.
He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Yamhill. He enjoyed
fishing, reading, watching Western movies and spending time with his
grandchildren.
Survivors include: wife Loretta of Lebanon; son Jonathan of Puerto
Rico; daughter Aimee Mayhew of Carlton; mother Frances of Lebanon;
brothers, George, Duane and Leroy, all of Lebanon; and three
grandchildren.
A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday,
followed by a memorial funeral mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. John
Catholic Church of Yamhill.

Paul L. Cappoen
Paul Louis Cappoen of Sherwood died May 14, 2007. He was 89.
He was born July 19, 1917, to Jerome and Rose (Fuhrer) Cappoen at
their Chehalem Mountain homestead and grew up in the Scholls area.
On March 13, 1939, he married Florence Ramsdell. The couple settled
in Tigard near Bull Mountain, where they purchased a farm. He worked
at Fashioncraft Furniture Co. and developed his property as a
commercial farm.
After retiring he moved to a small farm outside Sherwood, where he
continued to raise vegetables for small markets. He enjoyed
motorcycling and playing the organ.
Survivors include: sons, Paul of Portland, Merl of Hillsboro and
David of Milwaukie; daughters, Betty Smith of Federal Way, Wash.,
Dorothy of Clackamas and Joan of Gladstone; 16 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren.

John Everett Barrows of Newberg died April 26, 2007. He was 47.
He was born July 15, 1959, to Robert and Jean (Rinehart) Barrows in
Ithaca, N.Y., He attended California Polytechnic University in San
Luis Obispo, Calif. He worked as a manufacturing product engineer at
A-dec Inc.
He enjoyed mountain biking, sailing and spending time with family
and friends. He belonged to the Universalist Unitarian church.

Faith Alice Fendall, who has family in the Newberg area, died May
16, 2007, in Prineville. She was 78.
She was born Dec. 5, 1928, in Wenatchee, Wash., to Dillon and Fern
(Fewless) Mills. She graduated from Greenleaf High School in
Greenleaf, Idaho. She attended Cascade College in Portland and
worked at Emanuel Hospital. She married Phillip Fendall on Sept. 2,
1949, in Boise, Idaho.
She worked as a nurse at Providence Hospital in Portland and as a
teacher’s aide at Happy Valley Elementary School in Clackamas
County.
She was a member of the Friends Church in Clackamas Park. She
enjoyed oil painting, birdwatching and spending time with family.
Survivors include: husband Phillip of Prineville; son Steve of
Oregon City; daughters, Cheryl Taylor of Prineville and Rosanne
Harmon of Oregon City; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Maudie A. Nimmo
Maudie Arletta Nimmo, who has family in Newberg, died May 9, 2007,
in Flagstaff, Ariz. She was 92.
She was born March 10, 1915, to Samuel and Johannah (Stepsnik)
Nimmo in Salida, Colo. She was one of the original “Rosie the
Riveters,” working on an assembly line for Douglas Aircraft during
World War II.
She enjoyed doll making and stitchery.
Survivors include: sons, Ted and John of Newberg; stepdaughter
Eileen; stepson Kim; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 16
great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in

Bill A. Wright
Bill A. Wright of Amity died May 10, 2007, from prostate cancer. He
was 62.
He was born Nov. 17, 1944, in Oroville, Calif., to Bervin and Mary
Jean Wright. He and his wife, Carol, owned and operated Wright’s
Insurance Agency in Newberg since 1970.
He enjoyed hunting, ranching and spending time with family and
friends.

Wilma J. Parrish
Wilma Josephine Parrish of Newberg died May 6, 2007. She was 97.
She was born Jan. 12, 1910, in Newberg to William and Josephine
(McGuire) Cornell. She attended Newberg High School, graduating in
1927.
She took business classes at Pacific College (now George Fox
University) and worked as a legal secretary for the city of Newberg,
office manager for Spaulding Paper Co. (now SP Newsprint) and as
executive secretary for the Newberg School District.
She was a member of the Newberg Christian Church, where she played
piano for the church orchestra. She married Elery Parrish on July
23, 1933.
Her husband began a career as a pastor in Newberg and Portland’s
West Hills. She worked as church pianist and head musician, a role
she would continue to play throughout his career in the ministry.
In 1944, the couple cofounded Wi-Ne-Ma Christian Camp outside
Cloverdale. From 1947-49, they pastored Parkrose Christian
Church in Portland, followed by terms at the Liberty Church of
Christ in Salem (1949-51) and the First Christian Church of
McMinnville (1951-55). The couple also served congregations in
Seaside, Klamath Falls, Athena, Oretown and El Cajon, Calif.
In 1958, the couple was appointed to lead the North Willamette
Christian Evangelic Association, a ministry they held until 1968.
During that time, they helped establish congregations in Portland,
Milwaukie, Beaverton, Tigard and West Linn.
In 1968, they traveled around the United States before returning to
Oregon, where they headed the Kern Park Christian Church of Portland
and the Singing Hills Christian Church of Hillsboro. They also
assisted in the Oregon Christian Convention in Turner, where they
helped found Turner Retirement Homes.
In 1971, they settled on the Parrish family farm outside Newberg.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1993. In 2002, she moved to
Turner Retirement Home, returning to Newberg in 2005.
Survivors include: sons, Ronald and Warren, both of Newberg;
daughter Edith Parrish of Sunriver; two grandsons and a number of
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two
sisters.

Florence Terwilliger
Florence Terwilliger, formerly of Newberg, died April 26 in Sun
City, Ariz. She was 92.
She was born July 24, 1914, in Bethany to Lewis and Sara (Krug)
Buell. The family moved to Newberg when she was 5-years-old. She
graduated from Newberg High School in 1932.
She married William Terwilliger on Dec. 26, 1937. She attended the
University of Oregon, graduating in 1953, and in 1956 earned a
master’s degree in education. She worked as a music and gym teacher
in Klamath Falls and at Goshen Elementary in Springfield, where she
later became principal.
She attended the Ebbert Memorial Methodist Church, where she sang
in the choir and volunteered as a youth group adviser. She was also
a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, and
Business and Professional Women.
Survivors include: sons, Don of Eugene, Richard of Oklahoma City,
Okla., and David of Dayton, Nev.; daughter Carol Shafer of Sun City,
Ariz; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998.

Harold J. Osborn
Harold John Osborn of Newberg died May 7 at a local care center. He
was 95.
He was born Nov. 22, 1911, in Dodge Center, Minn., to John and
Pansy (Crandall) Osborn. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World
War II, serving on a number of ships at various ports on the West
Coast. Following his service, he moved to California, later settling
in Oregon. He worked as a house painter and later as a watch and
clock repairman.
He married Vivian Hughes in California on April 15, 1938.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and oval track car racing. He was a
member of the Sherwood Community Friends Church.
Survivors include: son Lawrence of Newberg; two grandsons and one
great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife Vivian in 1993.

Bobby Joe Mays of Sequim, Wash., who has family in Newberg, died

He was born Jan. 22, 1955, in Elkhart, Ind., to Kyle and Della
(Sheppard) Mays. He worked as an auto mechanic.

Thomas Richard Norwood of Newberg died May 7, 2007. He was 69.
He was born April 2, 1938, in Leland, Miss., to Daniel and Baldwyn
(White) Norwood. He worked in security and trucking.

George Thomas
George Thomas of Newberg died April 23, 2007. He was 88.
He was born Jan. 26, 1919, to Clyde and Mary (Kellogg) Thomas in
Scotts Mills. As a teenager, he felt the call to missionary work in
Africa and attended Pacific College (now George Fox University) to
pursue that goal, graduating in 1941.
Following graduation, he traveled to Mexico as part of a relief
team to help earthquake victims. Returning to the U.S., he moved to
Kentucky to teach school. While there, he met Dorothy Hughes, who
was also planning to be a missionary in Africa. They were married in
1943 and departed to Burundi, Africa, where they served five
missionary terms from 1944 to 1972.
They also served as missionaries to the Navajo Indians in Rough
Rock, Ariz., and pastored Northwest Friends churches in Sprague
River and in Woodland, Idaho. Between these pastorates they returned
to Rwanda, Africa, for two years to establish a mission there. They
retired to Friendsview Retirement Community in 2000.
In 2002, he received the Heritage Award for Christian Service from
George Fox University.
Survivors include: wife Dorothy of Newberg; daughters, Rosemary
Livingston and Rebecca Ankeny; brother William; sister Mary Dike;
four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

J. Edward Baker
James Edward Baker of Newberg died May 2, 2007. He was 96.
He was born Feb. 15, 1911, to William and Etta (Glover) Baker at
Chehalem Center. In 1935, he married Violet Newton. He graduated
from Pacific Academy (now George Fox University) in 1938 and
attended Portland Bible Institute.
He worked as a pastor in the Friends Church for more than 50 years,
beginning in 1934 in Caldwell, Idaho. After retiring in 1981, he and
his wife settled in Quincy, Wash. They returned to Oregon in 2005.
Survivors include: his wife Violet of Newberg; son John of East
Wenatchee, Wash.; daughters, Rachel Reinertsen of West Linn and
Bethel Thoennes of Corvallis; nine grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lester, Lawrence,
Lyle and Vernon; and sister Ruth Pratt.
A funeral service was held Monday at North Valley Friends Church with
pastor Bryan Christenson officiating. Committal followed at Noble
Pioneer Cemetery in Newberg.

Franklin L. Mattson Jr.
Franklin Lewis Mattson Jr. of Carlton, who worked in Newberg, died
April 26, 2007. He was 70.
He was born May 20, 1936, to Franklin and Cora (McCambridge)
Mattson in Portland. The family moved to Hockinson, Wash., when he
was young and he graduated from Battle Ground High School. He
enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving for four years. Returning home,
he worked for Consolidated Freightway and Laughlin Logging.
In 1969, he joined Publishers Paper Company (now SP Newsprint). He
retired in 2003 as the top operator at the de-inking plant.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, reading, doing crossword
puzzles and supporting his grandchildren’s sports activities.
Survivors include: sons, Brad of Carlton and Randall of Vancouver,
Wash.; daughters, Teresa Brey of Carlton, Sandra Kirkland of
Portland and Sheryl Joseph of Portland; sister Kathleen Jenkins of
Vancouver, Wash.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
