The NHS defense allowed Tigard little space to run Friday in Newberg's 27-20 win over their Pacific Conference foe.
Newberg defeated Tigard Friday to jump to 1-1 in the Pacific Conference and 4-2 for the season.
Newberg is a game behind league-leading Canby and Tualatin, both 2-0.
Newberg opened the game with a seven-play drive from their own 24-yard line. Newberg’s running back Joey Chandler broke the drive open with two consecutive runs of 22 and 29 yards. Wyatt Mahoney also contributed with a 13-yard gain on the drive and Chandler punched the ball into the end zone on a four-yard run. The extra point failed and the Tigers led 6-0.
The Tigers’ defense held Tigard to three plays on the next series and a gain of five yards with tackles by Brennan Miller and Conor Hazenberg.
After trading punts, Tigard quarterback Brian Gerhing connected on a 69-yard pass to Ian McGetrick to tie the score halfway through the second quarter. The extra point was good and Tigard let 7-6.
Newberg’s next possession began on their own 35 but stalled after a Matt Dufour fumble. Two plays later, Newberg got the ball back after Rory Oliver forced a Tigard fumble and Jacob Graham recovered.
The Tigers put on a six-play drive highlighted by a 12-yard Chandler run and a 19-yard pass from Dufour to Eli Votaw. Chandler punched it in again from four yards out, putting Newberg in the lead 12-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Newberg earned a safety on a failed punt by Tigard. The Tigers wasted no time. After a 50-yard gain on a pass from Dufour to Mahoney, Chandler ran it in for his third touchdown of the night, putting the Tigers up 20-7.
Tigard scored on their next possession, a seven-play drive capped by a 32-yard touchdown scamper by Beau Hansen. Newberg led 20-13.
Tigard’s Gerhing completed a three-yard pass to Shane Saunders and, with the extra point, tied Newberg at 20-20 with 5:15 remaining in the game.
After nine plays and the help of a pass interference call against Tigard, Chandler got loose for a 16-yard gain then popped it in from 14-yards out. Scott Goodman’s extra point was good with only 2:18 left to play and the score at 27-20.
Jordan Howell iced the victory with an interception in the closing seconds.
Chandler accounted for 170 of Newberg’s 251 yards rushing and scored all four touchdowns. Mahoney had 34 rushing and Dufour scampered for 32 yards in addition to 4/11 passing for 80 yards.
Newberg travels to Forest Grove for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
