Newberg is breaking into the television scene, big time. Mere weeks after Newberg native Tenley Molzahn debuted as a candidate on ABC’s “The Bachelor,” recent George Fox University graduate Kelly Bachran showed up on “American Idol.”

Bachran, a 2008 Fox graduate, isn’t an official candidate on the reality television show ... at least, not yet. But viewers saw her featured in the Denver auditions, which aired Tuesday night. She received a “Golden Ticket to Hollywood” for the second round of auditions, meaning she’ll appear on the show again.

Only 26 of about 180 Golden Tickets were handed out in Denver, one of the seven audition sites for the show’s ninth season. The Denver auditions took place in July 2009 at INVESCO Field.

“I’m really excited,” Bachran says in a behind-the-scenes interview, available at www.americanidol.com. “I sell insurance currently, so I have a really boring 9-to-5, so I’m just getting out there and doing what I’m really passionate about.”

Bachran was born in Hawaii and moved with her family to Salem at the age of 4. She has been singing her whole life, in musical theater, jazz ensembles, concert choirs and church groups. She graduated from Sprague High School before attending Fox, where she majored in organizational communication.

At GFU, she helped lead the chapel band for two years and worked on recording projects both on and off campus. In recent years, she has been doing solo work and singing with a cover band in Portland.
