Movie review — Lack of primary antagonist in first part of planned trilogy calls for invention

Dead ringer —
English actor Martin Freeman, a newcomer to the Tolkien-based series, was handpicked by director Peter Jackson to play Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy.
   There haven’t been many, of course, but Hollywood doesn’t boast the strongest track record for following up hugely popular, cult-followed trilogies with big-budget, three-part prequels — “Star Wars” being the classic case study.
